The Discovery of Spirulina

WHEN SPANISH EXPLORERS REACHED the cradle of Aztec civilization in the early 16th century, they found much that astonished them. Apart from the wonders of such an advanced society, they were puzzled by the natives' diet. The Aztecs lived on maize, beans, squash - and a mysterious blue-green scum that floated on Lake Texcoco of the Teotihuacan Valley where Mexico City stands today.

It was the passion for the mysterious blue-green scum called "tecuitatl" or "excrement of stones" prepared by the Aztecs as a dry cake and eaten with maize and other native cereals that the Spanish explorers could not understand. They never realized that "tecuitatl", the lowly blue-green algae of the lake produced more protein than the land could ever hope to yield and as such, they began an aggressive program of landfill and swamp reclamation to provide tillable land surface.

This blue-green algae they called "tecuitatl" is known today as Spirulina.

The Aztecs were not the only Meso-American people to rely on Spirulina for food and protein. The Mayan culture of the Yucatan Peninsula in Central America developed Spirulina ponds due to the rain forest environment which would explain how a Mayan population of two million was sustained at the height of the Classic period (900 A.D.) in spite of discouraging agricultural conditions for traditional field crops.


The Aztec consumption of Spirulina would explain the vitality of the population that built enormous cities and the temples of Tenochtitlan, waged war across the Meso-American heartland, and nurtured a sophisticated culture of art, mathematics and philosophy.

400 years after the conquest of the Aztec empire of Mexico, in 1964, a Belgian Botanist named Jean Leonard was part of a surveying party crossing the Sahara Desert. When the party reached Lake Chad, Leonard noticed that the local people of the Kanembu tribe waited for winds to push the blue-green algae toward the shore which became concentrated into a thick mesh. Using hand-made nets of straw, the women scooped the blue-green algae from the lake and dried them into porous dough cakes called "dihe" which were a favorite food and trade item at the local marketplace in Chad and Niger.

In the 1960's, concern about diminishing world food resources was increasing and Jean Leonard published a report about Spirulina as food and since then, the interest and research in Spirulina as well as production of Spirulina in a variety of forms has expanded.

Astounding Results from Africa Study...

Re-Vita's Liqua Health has been PROVEN to strengthen the immune system and alleviate malnutrition and anemia. As you can well imagine, we are so proud of our product and the things it can do for your body. Below are the final conclusions of a year-long study done in Kenya, Africa. The collaborating organizations of the study were Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) recognized by the (WHO) World Health Organization, Ministry of Health - Kenya, Department of Defense - Kenya, and Re-Vita Manufacturing Co.

The objective of the study was to determine the effects of Re-Vita's Liqua Health on nutrition and health of vulnerable 6 months to 5 year-olds. The number of study subjects reporting for medical treatment due to illnesses was practically halved within two-months into the study. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews with parents indicated reduction in the frequency of illness and improved appetite, and better growth among most of the participants. One of the participants in a separate study, Stella, a 27-year-old woman with AIDS, was given our product. Within six months, Re-Vita's Liqua Health has made the AIDS virus non-detectable. This news is so exciting. We know we have a great product and now we have the medical testing and evidence to back it up.

Conclusions of the Study on Effects of Multiple Micronutrients and Amino Acids Formulation [Liqua Health®] on Nutrition and Health of Undernourished Pre-School Age Children

The findings for the first 28 weeks attributed to reduction of pooled anemia and moderate to severe anemia by Liqua Health were 93.6% and 76.3% respectively.*

Anaemia control and Hb changes

  • LH supplementation with servings equivalent to WHO/UNICEF/INACG recommendations for 8 weeks and at >51% compliance halved the prevalence of moderate to severe anaemia in children at high risk of malaria and protein-calorie malnutrition.
  • LH supplementation of children with chronic anaemia due to multiple causes reduced the prevalence of moderate to severe grades of anaemia by 27.9% during high pressure malaria transmission season. This underlined the need to combine supplementation and anti-malarial intervention during high transmission periods.
  • The risk of severe forms of anaemia decreased with increasing compliance to LH supplementation during low malaria transmission season.
  • Reversal of Hb and age relationship from negative to weakly positive association after 28 weeks of LH supplementation to children with chronic anaemia confirmed the need for longer periods of supplementation to restore normal erythropoiesis as suggested in WHO/UNICEF/INACG guidelines. The need to bring forward the starting age for supplementation from 6 months to 4 months is also indicated.

Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) control

  • LH supplementation for 28 weeks reduced the prevalence of VAD by >48% and low liver stores by >45%. This underlined high bio-conversion of Spirulina ß-carotene to Vitamin A in the LH formulation.
  • There was no demonstrable hypervitaminosis A after LH supplementation for 28 weeks with or without a single large dose Vitamin A. This conformed with physiologically regulated bio-conversion of ß-carotene to meet body needs thereby eliminating risk of overloads.

Physical growth

  • Despite persistent food insecurity, LH supplementation, especially in combination with Vit A showed potential in reversing stunting. Grossly sub-optional protein and calorie intake among subjects possibly precluded definitive conclusion of the hypothesis that LH supplementation accelerates reversal of stunting, underweight and wasting among vulnerable children with basic minimum energy and protein intake.

Is Nutritional Supplementation Necessary For Healing And Health?
Yes! A well controlled study performed at the Shriners Burn Trauma Center at the University of Cincinnati Medical School demonstrated conclusively, that burn trauma victims (children experiencing severe burns over 60% of their bodies) fared far better when given extra nutritional supplementation over and above the normal "well balanced diet" generally prescribed by practitioners.(2)100% of those children receiving the extra supplementation lived, whereas tragically, 44% died of those children who were given the regular, traditional, medically and so called nutritionally balanced diet alone. The scientists stated that, "to our knowledge, this is the first controlled study to demonstrate what has been suspected and accepted for some time, that nutritional intervention improves survival... It may well be that fortification of the diet with still greater quantities of protein or with selected amino acids may further improve these variables." (3)

If A Medically Controlled Diet Is Insufficient, What About The Average American Diet?
It's worse! Authorities now agree that the average American diet no longer provides the needed nutrition for a foundation of good health.(17) Half of all foods eaten in America are overly processed convenience foods known to have little if any nutrient value.(15,16) Forty percent of middle class American children are severely malnourished, and adults fare far worse, upwards to 90%.(17) Both children and adults choose to eat for taste, cost and convenience. Coffee, white bread and sugar are the most popular, most consumed foods; adults consume mostly white bread and crackers.(3,4)

Aren't We Assured Of Getting Our Nutritional Needs Met By Getting All The RDI's?
No, not at all! And even if you think you're getting all your Recommended Daily Intake (RDI's), the RDI's are really only "guesstimates of unknown reliability" as admitted by one Harvard Professor who sits on the esteemed blue-ribbon panel of RDI scientists who originally established and defined for us the whole concept of RDI's.(10) Moreover, the RDI board readily admits its values are not meant to create "optimal health," in that the RDI's are only the suggested "minimum " or "adequate" daily requirements, or that which provides for "normal" health in most people, not the "optimum."(13,14)

So, What Is "Normal" or "Adequate" Anyway?
Most people get confused as to what "normal" or "adequate" really is, thinking that it means the "best" or "optimal." But when used scientifically, "normal" or "adequate" generally defines only that which is statistically "average," "common," or what most people experience (as in RDI's above). Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of possible misinterpretations. For instance, researchers from the Journal of the American Medical Association point out that the generally accepted "normal" or "average" serum cholesterol level in an older adult male is not healthy at all, rather it is indicative of a high risk for coronary heart disease.(13) The fact that this cholesterol level is "normal" only suggests that this is "what most males experience," obviously not the "best" or "preferred" levels for optimal health! Similarly, "normal" or "adequate " with regards to nutrition does not suggest that such will cause the "best" or "optimal" health that people can, could or should experience.(17)

Is "Optimal" Supplementation Measurably Better Than "Normal" or "Adequate" Nutrition?
Yes it is! For some time, scientists have known that most life on this planet can survive with less than optimal levels of nutritional intake; it's a blessing inherent in our genes to be able to survive in times of hardship. But authorities also point out that when an effort is made to optimize nutrient intake, to provide more than that which is just adequate, something wonderful happens: life is significantly better, healthier and longer, and with less disease and dysfunction.

It's not surprising that a well controlled study in Louisiana(17) demonstrated that when a sample of pregnant women ate "normally", they produced "normal" infants who grew into "normal" children who tested out to be "normal." What was surprising is that when the diet of these same (21) women was supplemented with nutrient-rich items, and they in turn became pregnant again, nursed their infants, and continued to give their infants that same supplementation program throughout early childhood, dramatic results occurred! These younger children were significantly superior to their older brothers and sisters (who hadn't benefited from additional nutritional supplementation) in every physical, emotional and intellectual test used to measure their developmental differences.(17) The conclusion: Above-Normal nutrition produces Above-Normal children.

But Doesn't Eating The "Right Foods" Ensure Optimal Nutrition?
Not anymore! Even though the ultimate guide to good eating has generally meant following the nutritional recipe of the "four food groups," published studies have shown that consuming a diet from the "four food groups" alone does not ensure adequate intake of all essential nutrients.(8) The answer to good health does not lie simply in eating the "right " foods. And, even if we were capable of supplying only nutrient-rich foods to our body, there's still a great deal that can go wrong in trying to extract and absorb these nutrients and still no guarantee that all would be assimilated.(17,24)

But Isn't The Digestive System Infallible?
No! Until recently, most thought that the process of digestion was foolproof and automatic, requiring the input of a balanced diet alone to ensure good health.(1:vol 1) But although digestion is "the" chemical and physical process that the body uses to extract 50 or so critical nutrients we need for life, while disassembling food into smaller more usable forms of building materials to repair itself, it's not altogether "Fail-Safe."(1:vol 1-3,12) There's no guarantee that all potentially available nutrition will be assimilated.(1:vol 1-2,12,17)

More and more doctors are coming to realize that the digestive system is not the infallible "cast iron" mechanism we first thought it was.(1) Despite a so called "balanced diet," much of the food ingested is not broken down far enough in digestion to release the essential nutrients it contains.(17,24) So, even if people try to eat right, and maintain a balanced diet, if we're unable to get at the nutrients locked up within these foods, they'll do us little if any good. The Bottom Line: We are not benefiting from the foods that we are eating when most of the nutrients are never fully extracted from the foods that we ingest!(1:vol1-3,12,17,24)

So, Why Does The Digestive System Break Down?
Each part of the Digestive System must be in prime working order, or the whole system suffers.(1,12,24) The integrity of the Digestive System itself relies on there being a constant sufficient store of appropriate stomach acid levels, a host of protein digesting amino-enzymes, carbohydrate digesting amino-enzymes, fat digesting amino-enzymes, as well as amino-vitamin, amino-chelated minerals, free form amino acids, neurochemicals and neuro-transport mechanisms to break down foods sufficiently enough to then transport and carry them throughout the body to where they're needed.(1,12,24) These chemical mechanisms are used up quickly and continually need refurbishing, relying upon newly digested foods to provide these materials.(12,19,20) Without them, further digestion becomes impaired and a number of malabsorption syndromes ensue. In other words, the digestive "pump" continually needs to restock its "primer water" or the pump becomes increasingly inefficient until it finally stops working altogether. And the problem is only compounded further when the diet is nutrient poor to begin with.

What Are The Consequences Of A Faulty Digestive System?
The inability of our dietary intake to be broken down into its constituent nutrients, and then get to where it's needed within the body, is a major problem often overlooked in health care. In fact, failure to extract the nutrients we need during digestion constitutes a serious form of malnutrition now running epidemic in our society. Make no mistake about it - the inability to extract and assimilate nutrients from provided foods (malabsorption) constitutes a form of malnourishment just as compromising and debilitating as an improper diet, or slow starvation itself.(19,20) All have a slow insidious effect, greatly lessening the power of natural resistance from disease, enfeebling the body and making it a prime target for illness and early death.(16,17) Moreover, malnourishment appears to be the leading factor, if not the major cause of most diseases and illnesses known to man.(6,7,15,16) As one example among many, in 1992 Dr. Bernadine Healy, the past (1988-1992) Director of the U.S. National Institute of Health, claimed that the American diet may directly contribute to as much as 35% of all cancer deaths and that two-thirds of ALL DEATHS can be attributed to life-style choices, including what we eat!(20) Authorities now believe that malnutrition is the insidious precursor of most modern day illness and dysfunction including birth defects, coronary heart disease, allergies, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, diverticulitis, kidney stones, gallstones, both mental and neurological disorders as well as other ailments and immune dysfunction.(6,7,11,16,17,18,19,21) In fact, reputable studies have recently demonstrated that there are no disease conditions today for which current medical treatment has a better chance of success than the best technical medical care of 1951.(10,17)

Further Evidence Why A "Balanced Diet" Isn't Enough For Good Health! For many of us, the integrity of the digestive system may have been compromised to some degree since birth, causing all sorts of problems from Asthma to Attention Deficit Disorder, from Immune Dysfunction to Cancer. And for the rest of us, the digestive system grows increasingly inefficient due to:

1. Erratic poor diet, bad nutritional habits and impurities within the foods we eat: We regularly consume over 2,800 FDA-approved food additives with another 10,000 additives being "incidental" to the agriculture and food-processing business.(17,25)

2. The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), Enteric Diseases Branch, has concluded that subtherapeutic amounts of antibiotics added to animal stock feed have subsequently caused animals to develop highly resistant strains of bacteria (mutant form of E.coli and others) which are then passed on for human consumption in all meat products. In fact, it's estimated that 20-25% of all bacterial illnesses (and perhaps 50% of all food poisoning) in the U.S. stems directly from antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria and the consumption of meats!(25)

3. The air we breath and the water we drink: Air and water contain more unwanted chemicals, radiation, toxins, pesticides, herbicides and other pollutants than ever before; in 1979 the U.S. EPA declared that up to 20% of all deaths in America are caused by pollutants and environmental hazards.(23) Pollutants act to use up nutrients faster than they can normally be re-supplied.(5,17,23)

4. Voluntarily, one-third of all adults smoke (while the rest of us involuntarily inhale secondary smoke), and more than half consume liquor regularly; illicit drug usage is almost beyond estimate. As with pollutants, drugs and stimulants of any kind destroy nutrients faster than they can normally be re-supplied.(17,21,23)

5. All of the above are further compounded by our excess use of antibiotics and other over-the-counter and prescriptive medicines. One-third of all children and 98% of the elderly use some form of medication, with the average person taking six types of drugs.(18) many drugs increase the need for various nutrients, which further worsens an already bad nutritional status.(19)

Conclusion: Supplementation Is A Must!
Minimum or commonly, but mistakenly, accepted "normal" standards of RDI's are generally insufficient (15,17,18) in preventing the onset of subclinical and clinical malnutrition,(20,21) which is the insidious precursor of modern diseases.(6,7,11,16,19) Reactive or Traditional Health Care Systems are failing at a rate of 1+ Trillion per year, relying on reactive minimum instead of proactive optimal standards of nutrition. But nutritional supplementation, all by itself or undirected, is not all that is needed. Nutritional materials by themselves do not have the power to orchestrate reconstruction of cellular pathways. The "cellular instructions" to regenerate must also be supplied!

    What is a Healing Crisis ?

    The healing crisis is a process in which the body undergoes an intense period of cleansing and rebuilding.     Symptoms of a "Healing Crisis"

    The intense period of housecleaning is accompanied by some unpleasant symptoms that could include vomiting, skin eruptions, nausea, headache, muscle aches and pains, sleepiness, unusual fatigue, diarrhea, head or chest cold, sinus congestion, ear infections, boils, as well as severe pain in affected areas of the body, or any other way the body uses to loosen and eliminate toxins. The healing crisis may last from a few days to a few weeks.

    The body must go through an elimination process to achieve good health. A healing crisis is the result of every body-system in concert to eliminate waste products and set the stage for regeneration. Old tissues are replaced with new. A disease crisis, on the other hand, is not a natural one and works against the body's natural processes.

    Symptoms may be identical to the disease, but there is an important difference -- elimination. A cleansing, purifying process is underway and stored wastes are in a free-flowing state. Sometimes discomfort during the healing crisis is of greater intensity than when building the chronic disease. This may explain why there may be a brief flare-up in one's condition.

    The crisis will usually bring about past conditions in whatever order the body is capable of handling at that time. People often forget the diseases or injuries they have had in the past, but are usually reminded during the crisis.

    One crisis is not always enough for a complete cure. The person in a chronic state, who has gone through many disease processes in life, must go through these processes again.
